California Teacher’s Outdoor Classroom a Screen-Free Success

At Penryn Elementary, a rural K-8 school just north of Sacramento, “Kindergarten is supposed to be magical,” according to Joyce Mucher. She didn’t want her kindergarteners to do virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. So with some help from parents, she created an outdoor wonderland. “Sometimes, it’s a slow process to do anything that’s new or different,” says Mucher. “So [the restrictions] became the opportunity to do things that in the past may not have been received as open-mindedly.”
