We Got Game: the Story of POPS the Club

Founded in 2013 at Venice High School by Amy Friedman and Dennis Danziger, Pain of the Prison System (POPS) is a high school club that welcomes students whose lives have been touched by incarceration. They offer a safe space where members are encouraged to write, talk and paint their truths. Co-founder Amy Friedman tells us, “We’re growing, we’re in 19 schools in 5 states. A few weeks ago we started a club in Georgia and 36 kids–the first day, 36 kids showed up! Graduates come back and speak powerfully of the impact POPS has had on their lives. “Our goal is to have graduates run the program.”
